Katsutomi Horiki

Recycle Art symposium 2008

'art is recycling of itself.'

Horiki has never been preoccupied with recycling, however he is convinced that art does not create anything new.
To him art doesn’t come from a tabula rasa but is a metaphorical form of recycling. He explains: ‘We are a lifetime engaged in a reach of working up and recycling. Our present originates from a culture that has been transmitted to us and that will transform every generation.’
Even the materials that he used, such as acrylic and oil originate from different periods. He mixed them together in order to make them complete, then used them with complementary colours so that they will be in harmony with each other.
He feels that in a certain way that this is a metaphor for the symposium. Likewise, he believes that the written word links us with Plato, Socrates and Aristophanes. Through many languages and different forms of artistic expression, artists will learn from each other.
Each person’s evolution is bound to every other’s.
The paintings of Katsutomi are evidence of his existence.
