Art under the volcano - symposium 2009/Indonesia

* painter, printer and co-organizer of the symposium in Yogya.
The main drive in Soeseno’s artwork is the emptiness and silence around us to purify his deepest thoughts.
He observes as a man ‘cause as an artist he has a tendency to look first to forms and colors. In Yogya he let the environment act on him.

Recycle Art - symposium 2008

'deep in me I'm a child.'

Soeseno has two responses to recycling. Firstly the negative - just collecting old stuff. Then the positive - reusing things and belongings.
On further reflection he thinks that as a society we produce things unnecessarily. As an artist, he is aware of living in a fruitful era. 'Our challenge is to care for our planet and to confront ourselves with over-production. Here is a reason to make use of recycling. It's our duty to future generations. When we treat nature exhaustively there will be nothing left at the end.'

Soeseno is very interested in plastic, a synthetic and colourful product developed to realise the consumer dream. It gives him a lot of incentive to recycle.
In principle he makes art for himself 'Because it makes me happy. It is just a creation that doesn't have to be beautiful and not always has to mean something'.
