The Poem

Lucebert
INDIAN SUMMER

I have laid my weapons in the grass
and my weapons smell like grass
I have laid my body in the grass
my body smells like wood bitter and sweet

this lying this tiny fluffy lying
as a yellowed photograph lying in water
shiny curled on the waves
or near the wood dusty of body and shadow

oh great breath don’t let the stones stand up
don’t harden their cheeks their eyes
smaller and more bespectacled and grey

let the lovers lie still land quiet
black between their silver ears and ah

let the girls still arrange their feathers and smile
