Toyin Loye
The symposium and it's dynamics The idea of artists coming together in a space with a preplanned theme sometimes may sound strange indeed for one reason of course:- That 99.9% of artists would prefer their solitude in their studios working and coordinating their chaotic ideas with media they are convenient with. That the privacy they enjoy within the four walls of their protective physical territorial space of studio is not trespassed. And indeed, that the way and technical realisation of the body of works they produced are not exposed to unwanted guests. And that they would be exposed to verbally and non verbally judgement. And of course that, their inspirational processes that lead to visual representation is not blocked through the traffics of wanted or unwanted passers byes. Interestingly, all these "would be impediments" eventually translated into source of inspiration for us all and for me in particular. The energy and of course the presence of Joyce Bloem whom we were all dedicating the symposium to brought the emotion, the passion and the fire that lit spirits of all participants leading into enormous creativity and realisation of artistic works produced. The hospitality of our host and hostess, Jeroen van Schie and Paula Kouwenhoven, shall not be unmentioned. They have provided the space and atmosphere that made it possible for us to achieve the aim of the symposium. We ate, drank, slept, swam in abundance of materials; relaxed, recharged our batteries of inspiration and of course had the opportunity of meeting and making new friends (comrades in art). Thanking you both for everything. The symposium would be remembered forever. And long live Joyce ! May you continue to win the battle. Title of work: Me and my Spirit (acrylic on canvas)
